Baffin Island Dog Sledding Expedition
High
Arctic Adventure!
Tradition
still plays an important part in everyday life
in Canada’s high Arctic. No other activity
defines the Arctic quite like the traditional
dog team. Guided by an Inuit hunter, you will
step back in time and experience what it must
have been like to travel through the Arctic over
a hundred years ago. Solitude and silence are
only broken by the panting of the dogs as they
eagerly pull you across the white expanse of
frozen ocean. Teams usually consist of 12 dogs
in a fan hitch with two passengers per sled plus
guide. Teams are accompanied by an additional
guide driving a snow machine with all camp gear
in a komatik (sled). A third support guide
travels ahead each day to set up the next base
camp; giving you the choice of tent or igloo
accommodation each night. As with all good
adventures, the route is not completely set,
allowing flexibility for pace, snow conditions
and weather. It will never get dark so the
spectacular mountains, glaciers and icebergs can
be enjoyed in all light spectrums. Fresh water
is gleaned from nearby icebergs. This is a
special and unique Arctic journey, a chance to
travel back in time to the era of classic arctic
exploration. Avid readers of Canadian Arctic
history should place their books aside, put on
warm clothes and head to Baffin Island to
experience the real thing.
It can still be cool at this time; temperatures
in the -23c range are not uncommon during
spring. A comprehensive ‘what to bring’ clothing
list will be provided.
